You know, for such a superior race, humans really aren't that great. We take an enormous amount of energy just to keep our basic functions running, and more to keep us in good help. There's an enormous amount of things that can and do go wrong on a daily basis, even with proper care. We are incredibly helpless after birth and take more than 15 years to begin to be able to function on our own. And on the topic of birth: reproduction in humans is painful for the mother and drags on for nine whole months. Nine whole months of having a parasite feeding off your body. Excuse me, but what?

We have horrible waste management, a delicate digestive tract (so we can't eat a wide range of foods without ill effects), we tend to get sick a lot (even only mildly). We can't run very fast, smell, hear, or even taste very well, we have parts of our body that are essentially just wastes of space and energy, we're not very strong and our social structure is somewhat needlessly complicated.

Bacteria had the right idea, really. Small, compact, self reproducing, energy-efficient...

They may not be able to solve quadratic equations, or even open doors, but they make a hell of a lot more sense.

Good thoughts. Although I think that humans are special simply because we are so tumultuous and complicated, but because of all that badness mixed up in there, that's how we're able to do amazing things and live more greatly and fully. I don't think I'd like to be a bacterium. Life wouldn't mean much, or at least I assume. ;)

*shnork* No kidding.

That's true. And I'm one to be talking about sense...

Of course, I all too often find having a brain to be obnoxious, as it causes me to worry. However, without brains we would not have fanfiction or books, and that would be sad indeed.

See, I just feel guilty because I personally am such a waste of resources. I don't even think about the wider ramifications.
Er. /random self-hatred

Bacteria > us? In numbers, yes, but sometimes higher cognitive functions and creativity are cool, too. Scarcity and delicacy are the prices we pay for that.

Yeah, I can understand that. I get that sometimes.

And that's true. We like creativity. Without creativity, we would not have muffins. Or something like that.

I totally need an icon that says "...and then you die."

<3 Creativity is god. And muffins.

Done.

<3. Yay muffins. ICON!

I need more life. Or stuff to do.

O, speak again, bright angel! for thou art
As glorious to this night, being o'er my head
As is a winged messenger of heaven
Unto the white-upturned wondering eyes
Of mortals that fall back to gaze on him
When he bestrides the lazy-pacing clouds
And sails upon the bosom of the air.

This is when I realise that despite the fact that we are sickly, resource-consuming creatures we can create beauty like this. Or at least Shakespeare can. <3 I feel like if I can put something out there that will change someone's life or the world around me then I'm making up for the reasons you stated in your lj post.

Of course, this post was strictly biology related...I totally appreciate the many artistic and more abstract accomplishments of the human race.

What is this biology you speak of? ;-) But yeah, I definitely understand what you're saying when you're speaking of the human race in that sense.
