What people are thinking. Exhibit A:
fanficrants.
I feel abused right now, because of my book interests. When people hate fantasy, it makes me want to smash things, but only really when they insist that everyone who reads fantasy must be a dumb-ass who reads it for teh pronz or a D&D nerd. Just in case the issue was unclear, I am neither. Unfortunately, I seem to get this feeling a lot around my friends, when we get into discussions of books. And when Lina goes off about sex in books, I just sort of cringe and hide my copies of books with sex in them, because I really don't mind. I mean, I don't just read it to get off, but I don't mind if there's gratuitous sex in my books, as long as the rest of it is good. Really.

Which character:
Is the newest?: Any of the characters written in my new story, excepting Keearh. Aliah was in another story, but she's very different now.
Is the oldest?: Actually, Ruby the Border Collie Sue, but I'll just go with Iris on this one.
Is most fun to write?: I love Taine. Like whoa. So him.
Is most fun to draw?: Keearh. Shirtless, with wings. He's sexy. And crazy, but that's beside the point.
Is the most like you?: All of my characters have a little bit of me. But probably the one most like me would be Deirdre.
Is the least like you?: That's tough. Probably Iris, though.
Is your favorite?: That's too hard. I love Taine to death, but I also adore Othello, and there's a soft spot in my heart for Iris.
Has the best name?: I don't know. I've never really loved any names. I like Taine's, but I like the name Viviane for the character, a lot.
Most likely to:
Jump off a bridge?: Othello. To commit suicide.
Get drunk and pass out?: Version 2.0 Iris or Othello. But not really anybody.
Kill somebody in a very unorthodox way?: Keearh - and he does, with some regularity.
Get married?: ...Iris. Eventually.
Be far too hyper for their own good?: ...I really don't have any hyper characters.
Get lost and refuse to ask for directions?: Taine, Keearh, or Viviane.
Get lung cancer?: No one. Except maybe Othello, because that would just be something that would happen to him.
Star in a video game?: Keearh, only not really.
Make the world a better place?: None of them. Most of my characters aren't really very great people. Othello did save the world indirectly, though. So him, I guess.
Have a torrid gay love affair?: Taine and Keearh, hands down. I mean, they're practically lovers already.
Relate each word to a character of yours:
Love: ...Othello or Aliah.
Hate: Keearh
Money: ....no one.
Seduction: Taine, or Aliah.
Lies: Taine
Tragedy: OTHELLO.
Manipulation: Taine
Violence: Keearh or Viviane
Politics: Taine
Fire: Keearh
Ice: Taine or Iris
Would you ever:
Create a prostitute character?: No, because it would be too easy to fall into the 'hooker with a heart of gold' trap.
Create a musician character?: Maybe. Depends on the story.
Create a pilot character?: See above.
Create a homosexual character?: Yes, if it suited the story. Not just for kicks, though.
Create a character for the sole purpose of smut?: No.
Create character who commits incest?: As before, yes, if it suited the story. And yes, I have. That would be Othello. Everyone say hi.

People who bash fantasy books clearly either haven't read any or haven't read any GOOD ones. *nods*

I can't stand it when people hate on scifi/fantasy at all. I will be the first to admit that some of it really is bad, but you know something? There's terrible crap in any genre and they don't rag on that crap half as much as they attack scifi/fantasy as a whole. It's so stupid.
I took a creative writing class first semester at FSU, and I was planning on doing something fantasy for my short story assignment. Then my teacher told us we could only write "what we know" and that we weren't allowed to write fantasy, which he referred to as "trash literature", at all. I seriously almost walked out of the class when he kept referring to it as trash.
People who automatically assume fans of the genre are dumbasses or D&D nerds are the real dumbasses. Most of the ones I've come across like that are the kind of people who haven't willingly read a book since See Spot Run in first grade, and it's quite obvious.
The ones who rant about the sex in fantasy books make me laugh a lot, too. OH NO! Sex in a book?! Yeah, I know for a fact that plenty of other genres have it too. It doesn't bother me at all, unless it's just totally over-the-top and uncalled for.

Mah cents of two:
I personally don't read many books with sex in them, but that's just because of my taste in books, I guess. It just doesn't come up much in books that I read. But I wouldn't not read a book because it has sex in it. I don't think it's, like, superior one way or the other. Or that the person reading a book with or without sex is more or less superior. If that makes sense.
Good meme. XD

Fantasy & Sci Fi readers are still very much a minority group, I fear. You go into a library or bookshop and there's, what, one bookcase? Squished between 18 cases of crime (lol) and 12 of romance. I don't understand how people can trash it as a genre when we know there are such fabulous, amazing, moving books there. I love fantasy! I accept that this (amongst other things) makes me a big nerd :D pff, who wants 'average' anyway.
